INTRODUCTION
When you read narratives, you would always like to get the BIG PICTURE and of course you can only figure it out once you determine WHAT the NARRATOR is trying to tell the readers.
We have to ask the question WHAT is his POINT in telling me this story?
In figuring out Matthew’s point, I came to this conclusion: He was trying to prove that Jesus is the Messiah. First, he proved that through the genealogy of Jesus by pointing out that Jesus belonged to the THRONE of SUCCESSION through the LINE of DAVID by Joseph – His legal father.
Next, he rattles off details and events to point that they fulfilled BIBLICAL PROPHECY. This is how Matthew Chapter 2 begins, and Matthew starts with Jesus’ birthplace which fulfills Biblical prophecy
BODY SERMON
TEXT: Matthew 2:12 – 23
Matthew continues relating his narrative with that intention in mind and in the passage that we will be studying, we will see that in three points:
I. The Fulfillment of Prophecy through God’s WARNINGS & INSTRUCTIONS – vv. 12 – 15
1. The Warning & Instruction to Magi – v. 12
2. The Warning & Instruction to Joseph – v. 13
3. The Obedience of Joseph – vv. 14 – 15
II. The Fulfillment of Prophecy through Herod’s Wrath – vv. 16 – 18
III. The Fulfillment of Prophecy through Joseph’s Obedience – vv. 19 – 23
CONCLUSION
All the events that surrounded the life of Jesus continually CONFIRMED that He was the MESSIAH, DAVIDIC KING and SAVIOR of the WORLD.
Matthew is like a LAWYER showing ALL HIS EXHIBITS and EVIDENCES to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus is really who He claims to be.
