BODY SERMON
I. DATE OF COMPOSITION
Early A.D. 60’s which means that the church had already been in existence for about 30 years.
The second generation of Christians would soon replace the 1st generation and so there was a need for written documents that would somehow protect the doctrines of the Church as they would now have a ready reference on the LIFE, WORDS and WORKS of Jesus Christ.
II. AUTHOR: Matthew – the disciple in 9:9
– Matthew was a Jewish Tax Collector
III.CENTRAL THEOLOGICAL EMPHASIS
– The Old Testament points forward to Christ.
– In Jesus, all God’s purposes have come to fulfillment.
IV.TYPOLOGY
Recognition of a correspondence between the New and Old Testament event in terms of the Old Testament model. In Chapter 2, we see Jesus presented as the New Moses.
V. CHRISTOLOGY
Who is Jesus at the heart of Matthew’s theological task? There are 4 prominent titles:
A. CHRIST- is the Greek equivalent of Messiah
B. SON OF MAN
C. KING
D. SON OF GOD
CONCLUSION
As we are now surveying the highlights of this book, you already see HOW RICH and HOW REVEALING this book is.
Through this book, we will get to know our Savior in all His glory and what He had achieved for us in His 1st coming.
